Screen Magnifier as an Assistive
ICT Tool A screen magnifier is another powerful ICT assistive tool that enlarges content on digital screens, enabling students with low vision or partial visual impairments to access information more effectively. Unlike traditional magnifying glasses, digital screen magnifiers are software-based and come built into most operating systems, including Microsoft Windows Magnifier, Apple’s Zoom function, and Android’s accessibility features. These tools allow students to magnify portions of their screen, such as text, images, icons, or buttons, based on their comfort level. Some tools also allow contrast adjustments, inversion of colors, and cursor enhancements, which make viewing easier for users with different types of visual difficulties.
In the classroom setting, screen magnifiers enable students with visual challenges to engage with the same digital resources as their peers. For instance, during a computer-based assignment, a child with low vision can use a magnifier to zoom in on instruction texts, locate buttons, or read from online educational platforms like Google Classroom or Khan Academy. Instead of needing special large-print worksheets or textbooks, these students can work with the same digital resources as others, just adapted to their visual needs. This fosters a more inclusive environment where no student feels singled out or dependent on someone else to interpret the material.
As I reflect on the use of screen magnifiers in teaching, I realize their importance in promoting independence, dignity, and participation for all learners. These tools allow students to complete tasks without having to rely on others for assistance. When students have access to tools that match their learning needs, they are more likely to be confident, motivated, and successful. Screen magnifiers also teach valuable life skills, such as navigating technology, problem-solving, and adjusting settings based on personal needs like skills that are essential for students with disabilities in the modern world. For me, using such tools is not just about accessibility as it is about equity, respect, and creating a classroom where every child has a fair chance to learn and grow.
